Angie stopped for a while to let Silver graze. She had ridden at ease with him through the green, sloping fields because she wanted to make this trip as long as possible. The weather was beautiful. The sun shone down from a cloudless sky, but she was not in a sunny mood.
She looked at the long manes of the horse and stroked them with her fingers.
Angie possessed nothing. A little necklace, a cheap ring from Chuck; her clothes were in rags and there was an old blanket to roll in when it was cold at night and forced to spend the night in the open.
But Silver was hers and no one elseâs! Silver was her very best friend. She felt safe on the back of the fast, bright stallion â like a robber knight feeling safe when he has returned behind the thick walls of his castle after a plundering.
She had lost her parents and the only home she had ever known was no more than a bale of straw in the stables of Lord Baltimore. She had been forced to leave the Baltimore farm to keep Silver out of the hands of Prince John. She had succeeded in that, but then she could not return to the farm â the soldiers of the prince would have arrested her. To not end up in a cold dungeon, she had to flee â the same as so many other outlawed people.
There was a price on her head. Prince John was eager to pay a lot of gold coins to get her behind bars.
Fleeing was possible on the back of fast Silver, the young wonder horse. On the back of her faithful horse, she was able to escape from the most critical situations. Silver had learned so much from Saladin, the big, black wonder horse.
âOh, how I will miss you, Silver,â she said in a soft voice into one of his pricked-up ears.
A soft, sad neigh came as an answer. Immediately, she sat up straight in the saddle again. Did the intelligent animal understand her? Silver had never neighed so soft and full of compassion before. Angie tried to shake off all nasty thoughts.
âOne more time as fast as we can, Silver! At a gallop! Come on, here we go!â
Silver was fast as lightning, and Angie was a good rider sitting perfectly in the saddle. The young stallion jumped over uprooted trees and ditches and sometimes it was as if he was floating! The trampling of hoofs was hardly audible. Every passenger at random would have sworn that the horse wasnât running but flying like a silver bird, skimming over the green plain at an incredible speed.
âAll right, easy now, slow down, slow down. That was great, Silver. No other horse can do that!â
The animal moved his head quickly up and down and produced a far more cheerful neigh.
Angie found herself close to the little town of Nottingham now. Much to her surprise, she saw a man sitting down on the field whom she immediately recognized as the former sheriff.
